With the increased use of the internet in years past and years to come there has been an increase in digital piracy in the music industry.  The music industry is perhaps one of the most influenced industries affected by digital piracy.  The popularity of digital piracy in the music industry has increased drastically because music is now really easy to access.  Before the age of the internet, in order to get new music a person would have to go to a store and buy a physical copy (i.e. CD or Tape).  Today, a person can simply buy a copy of a particular album with just the click of a button.  Online services such as iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and rhapsody allow users to purchase new music in seconds.

With the shift of many musical artists distributing their music online rather than physically, there has been a drastic increase in digital piracy.  One person can buy a digital copy of music from an online source, and in turn post it online for anyone to download it for free. Popular music download websites that are currently in use are called Hulk share, 4shared, and pirate bay. These websites allow users to pirate music.  Music pirating is so advanced today that the general public can download the music before the distributing company sells its first copy.

Digital piracy has affected the economy of the music industry.  The industry loses money due to piracy and causes the industry not to be as profitable as it could.  Some musical artist have attempted to slow down digital piracy but it will be nearly impossible to completely stop it.  Artist and distributing company are currently trying to find new ways to distribute music in order to halt digital piracy.  This will be a daunting challenge to the industry but with lots of research and experimenting they will find a way to end it.

  1. I think it would be interesting to know how musical artists are attempting to slow down digital piracy.

    1. well to think about it... there isn't much that they can do. they can sue all they want but most money doesn't even come from this. its the label records that lose money.

  2. If these music pirating websites are so well known, how are they still in existence? Is there an agency that has the power to remove such websites?

    1. Although there are many well known websites, there is no enforcement of the laws. I guess that punishing participators is not the law enforcers top priority right now.

  3. I'm not sure that is completely correct. Demonoid and Pirate Bay have both struggled at various times with staying up. From what I've read over the years it seems that a major part of their business model involves constantly relocating their domain servers from country to country. Also, Demonoid was a hugely popular site which has effectively been shut down.

    1. you should check out what most people actually do not know about and it was pretty amazing. it is called popcorn time. it kills netflix. you wouldn't need to use pirate bay.

  4. It is sort of weird to think about the fact of how easy it is to pirate media via PirateBay or Demonoid. Even though it may be illegal and people think that they are enforced, obviously they are not being enforced enough because it's still happening.

    1. I'm pretty torn on using those sites. Of course it's really tempting to use them and get what you want without really paying for it, but it's also really tough to use them knowing there's a possibility of getting in trouble.

  5. I'm not sure if there will ever be an end to pirating music. Simply because technology is advancing every month, day, hour even. Unfortunately for musicians, there will always be a way to download a song for free. I don't think pirating itself will end but perhaps other services such as Pandora or even Youtube will replace obtaining free downloads.

    1. Absolutely agree. Now you don't even have to go to sites like 4shared or mediafire or any torrent site to download music for free. You can do it through popular social network websites! I was surprised to find out that on some popular social websites that allow users to upload music and videos, one can simply view the htms source, copy a music file link and download a song. It is that easy and nothing can be done about it.

  6. Music artists make an enormous amount of money for the music they make. While they do take a cut of the amount of profit they could potentially make from piracy, it is not deep enough for the artists to actually make a lawsuit over. While some artists have followed through with lawsuits, it obviously isn't affecting the music industry in a huge way or else artist would all be suing piracy websites and the government would be cracking down on all piracy.

    1. There are online applications like Spotify that allow users to listen to new music for free. Which is a platform that give artist the opportunity to showcase their music.
